01/01/2024   Happy New Year and goodbye from Chris Donkin

After supporting the Compacts in the East Midlands since their inception in 2007 it is time for me to retire and try to lower my golf handicap, raise my chess grading and spend more time with my 5 grandchildren. The D2N2 PS Compact is in safe hands as I have passed the baton to the new Compact Executive Officer Chris Grocock who can be contacted via Chris.Grocock@the-futures-group.com I thank all the wonderful colleagues I have worked with over the last 16 years for some great times and for helping make the Compact the 'voice of the public sector' in Notts and Derbys. Best wishes to you all for the future.

21/09/2022   Mansfield DC and Derby College working together

Mansfield District Council and Derby College are working together on our apprenticeship programme following the networking event earlier this year, organised by the D2N2 Compact group.

Lorraine Powney, Fiona Skinner and myself arranged a follow up meeting to discuss the offer from Derby College, discussing various funding opportunities and possible partnership work, including digital training for staff and also their horticulture apprenticeships.

We have progressed with both over the last few months, and Fiona will share further information about the Digital programme with Ashfield District Council that is now up and running.

As part of MDC’s support of the apprenticeship programme and the commitment to offering development roles to people living and working in our district, one of the standards we have used successfully has been the level 2 and level 3 horticulture apprenticeships. We have had several success stories over the last few years and had enjoyed a good relationship with a local provider. Unfortunately the provider ceased trading in 2021 so we needed to source a new provider. Fiona talked to us about her horticulture programme and what our requirements were, and has been working with us over the last few weeks.

We have identified 2 members of staff who would like to do an apprenticeship. We are currently arranging the sign up for the first member of staff to do their level 2 and we hope they will commence later this month. The second member of staff is going to be progressing straight to level 3 due to prior learning and job experience, so we also hope to sign him up in the next few weeks.

We are looking forward to our continuing work with Derby College.

Francine Rowley – Talent and Skills Advisor – Mansfield District Council.

23/08/2022   Clarifying the need for contract of employment for Apprenticeship programmes

Bev Moxon writes:

When I attended the meeting a couple of months ago people raised their concerns about having to supply a copy of the apprentice’s contract of employment including upskilling existing employees via an apprenticeship. I’ve had a response from policy please see below.

Employment arrangements P332 The evidence pack must include: P332.1 Evidence of employed status and evidence that this employment is for a period which is long enough for the apprentice to complete the apprenticeship successfully, including the end-point assessment (e.g. a relevant extract from a contract of employment or a signed declaration by the employer). This information will be cross-checked with HMRC PAYE data. Link to funding rules provider funding rules 22-23

Kind regards

Bev

17/05/2022   UNISON active during Learning at Work Week

From Gavin McCann UNISON Regional Learning Coordinator

Dear colleagues,

As it’s Learning at Work Week this week I wanted to make you aware of what UNISON is doing across the region.  I thought this may be helpful for you to see what is being offered as I am aware that many employers are happy to promote many of these things.

 Learning Survey

Yesterday we emailed every member in the region and asked them to complete a learning survey which will help us identify what they want to learn as well as the barriers.  You can see that survey here: https://survey.alchemer.eu/s3/90454162/Learning-at-Work-Week-2022-E-Midlands-Members-survey.  We should be able to provide employers with the overall data for their workforce if this is helpful.

Free courses, grants and support

We have set up a ‘Learning at Work Week’ page to try and bring together the different elements of the offer for members (courses, grants and support).  You can find that here: http://eastmidlands.unison.org.uk/learningatworkweek/.  There is also a downloadable newsletter on this page.

 Promoting Learning during the week

As noted above we emailed every member on Monday but we are also out and about across the whole region during the week holding stalls and events. If you have any questions please let me know.

 Best wishes

 Gavin McCann

02/09/2019   Making 20% off the job work - A webinar on Sept 25

Here is an opportunity presented by our friends at Pearsons

Join us for our free apprenticeship webinar in partnership with Pearson

Wednesday 25th September 2019 from 11:00 am-12:00 pm

20% off-the-job training requirement continues to be a hot topic for debate. But with the levy now in place for over two years:

  • How have employers implemented this requirement in different sectors and across various standards?
  • What impact have some of these approaches had to-date and are there better ways to implement this key requirement?
  • If employers had an opportunity to change this requirement, what advice would they give to policy makers?

Hear our panel of employers share their experiences and insights on this and more.

Chaired by Rohini Bhattacharya, Director of Apprenticeships at Pearson, the employer panel includes:

  • Claire Lish, Director of HR, Pepper UK
  • Darren Avery, Apprenticeship Lead, Great Ormond Street Hospital
  • Dave Bevan, Training & Development Specialist, Blue Chip

02/08/2019   Joined up CAREers in Derbyshire!

 What we do

Joined up Careers Derbyshire works in partnership with health organisations and local authorities to support the current and future workforce in system wide initiatives including workforce development, recruitment and retention as well as promoting career and employment opportunities throughout the city and county.

We play an active role within schools and colleges, workplaces, and the wider community, promoting all that is best about working in health and social care.  For young people we offer enrichment workshops (practical, interactive sessions that complement the health and social care curriculum), mock interviews (helping prepare students for the world of work), and one-to-one careers coaching.  We also deliver workshops in specialist areas such as values, maths in a care setting, first aid, safeguarding, and dementia to students. In the last six months, more than 20 careers events and job fairs have been held attracting 14,000 people.

We work with private, voluntary and independent organisations to provide tailored support on workforce priorities, including targeted recruitment campaigns, sharing best practice, and identifying opportunities for workforce development.

In conjunction with the D2 Local Economic Partnership, Joined up Careers offers a system-wide approach to inclusive recruitment and support for social mobility.  We have teamed up with Job Centre Plus and the Department for Work and Pensions to run ‘sector based work academies’ providing work placements, training and employment opportunities for jobseekers.

In September 2018 we launched an innovative integrated health and social care apprenticeship pilot. This programme is offering individuals a 15-month rotational apprenticeship scheme across health and social care organisations, including primary care and private and voluntary organisations. Apprentices receive on-the-job training and will qualify for a care certificate and level two apprenticeship in health and social care.

To support the Derbyshire ‘Model of Care’ and the new NHS Long Term Plan, Joined up Careers Derbyshire is working with local organisations to re-design care aimed at developing fully integrated, community-based care across the city and county. We are working with key stakeholders to support integrated ‘place’ teams to create new roles which will reduce pressure on hospital services and boost out-of-hospital care.

To enable this I would like to invite you to a Health & Social Care Sector Skills Workshop, where the aim will be to work together to identify how we can get people to access the right skills training both at entry level and those requiring up-skilling who are already working within the sector.  There is funding available to do this for SME’s through the EU MoveAhead/StayAhead funding which Nottingham City Council are the lead.  It would be great for as many as possible to maximise this opportunity!  Involvement and participation of employers within the sector is key and gets them involved directly with us, giving a voice in the development of a Health & Social Care Talent Academy.

It may be that you have a key link within a care organisation, including GP surgeries within the D2N2 geography that may wish to be involved.  Other representatives invited will include the  MoveAhead/StayAhead Partners, Training Providers (NTU, UoN, Nottingham College), Nottingham Futures, and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.  Please let me know of any employers you think would be willing to engage with us on this project and I will extend the invite, making sure the room I have booked is of sufficient capacity.

My aim will also be to inform how I can support the access to resource and funding to help us achieve our aims in skills growth.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!  Those of you, who I have not met, I look forward to working with you in 2019.

Kindest regards

Marie Read

Skills Growth Manager

From Magda Zurba (magda.zurba@sharedservicearchitects.co.uk) of SSA has provided this info

We, at SSA, in partnership with an apprenticeship provider in Derby called Develop Training, are organising an open session on 18th of September on ‘How to harness your apprenticeship levy funding for organisational collaborative transformation and shared services leadership?

Some of the questions we will be addressing during the session are:

  • How can you harness your apprenticeship levy funding to advance your organisation’s collaborative transformation and shared services ambitions?
  • How do your leadership ensure the programme delivers their collaboration strategy and it is embedded into your organisation?
  • How can we support your levy manager, line managers, and your operational management with setting it up and throughout the programme?
  • How can you rapidly create a small pilot cohort to test the programme?
  • How do you design a template for the 20% “off the job” activities required by the levy?

As the session is aimed primarily at apprenticeship levy-managers and operational managers interested in undertaking a Level 5 Apprenticeship with a focus on Collaborative Transformation

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to let you all know about an exciting event we are running on the 20th November at the Pride Park Stadium. We are running our next large scale apprenticeship event for 1,000+ post 16 students across the East Midlands. Just after 2 weeks of promotion we signed up over 800 kids from across 18 different schools. Arriva Busses are transporting all the students in for us and Experian are Headlining the Event with us. Other brands that are also confirmed up are; IBM, EY, BDO, Barclays, Pearson and Sodexo. DCFC are also playing a big part on the day for the students, Frank Lampard I've been told may show up!

Our events are not your typical careers fair, they are workshop based along with talks and presentations all throughout the day. Every student will be using our Young Professionals App (the only school and college leaver employment app in the market place) on the day and at the end of the event we can share this data with you to help with your talent acquisition pipelines.

If you'd like to get involved or want to find out more, please get in touch.

21/02/2018   Apprenticeships event at NTU on the 7th March

Public Sector: Apprenticeships Work at NTU
Wednesday 7 March, 1 pm - 3.30 pm

There's long been an association with apprenticeships - that only certain businesses and industries stand to benefit from investing in apprentices. However, with the introduction of the mandatory apprenticeship levy, the funding and additional incentive opportunities available to SMEs, and the variety of apprenticeships on offer, more businesses are beginning to realise the potential of apprenticeships.

At NTU we're planning to expand our apprenticeship portfolio further, with the intention of launching courses in areas such as Healthcare Science Practitioner*, Further Education Learning and Skills Teacher*, Healthcare Assistant Practitioner*, Police Constable*, Social Worker*, Registered Nurse*, and Teacher*.

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2018, we'd like to invite you to a free event specially tailored to the needs of those working within the public sector, looking to learn more about how degree apprenticeships can work for their organisations.

This event will explore the relevant apprenticeships on offer and in development at NTU, and offer practical advice and guidance regarding the challenges and opportunities apprenticeships within the public sector present. As well as this, attendees can have one-on-one sessions with academics and members of the apprenticeship team, and network with other employers.

We anticipate this event will be popular, so don't hesitate to book your place

15/08/2017   Your chance to participate in the N2 Work Experience Steering Group

Good Morning Chris

We would certainly welcome your participation in the Work Experience Steering Group. We are still taking nominations.

We would also welcome any additional support you can garner from you wider membership including any promotion you can engineer – all would be grateful.

I have included a blurb below for you to circulate to members. I will be in touch will all individuals that have expressed an interest this week/next week to convene a meeting.

Young people in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire’s (N2) disadvantaged communities are not getting enough high quality work experience – What is the Challenge?

  • Employers and schools continue to report frustrations when attempting to deliver successful work experience placements.
  • Across N2, although there are a number of organisations supporting schools and employers to create work experience placements, the number of employers offering placements falls well below that required for the N2 pupil population.

Action - We need your support to develop an N2 Work Experience Steering Group

  • Work experience is a proven way for supporting unemployed individuals in to employment – a strategic priority for the N2 Skills & Employment Board (SEB)
  • The SEB have a role to play in advocating the benefits of work experience and to encourage more employers to create high quality placements.
  • We would like to establish an employer led N2 Work Experience Steering Group.
  • Initially, the group will consist of between 5 – 10 employers, Futures Training and Advice, schools and myself as N2 Skills & Employment Partnership Manager.
  • The aspiration is to deliver a large scale N2 Work Experience Week Campaign. This will see a significant number of local employers offering high quality placements over a period of a week, to young people and adults in our more deprived communities.
  • In addition to planning the event, the steering group will develop a long term plan for how we can stimulate growth in the number of placements available over the next 12 – 18 months
  • This is a perfect opportunity for you as Employers to promote career pathways in your sector readdressing acute skills shortages

I envisage that following the first meeting, much of this activity can be driven remotely, however to kick things off we would really appreciate employers joining the conversation so that we can embed employer need at the heart of this work.

If you would like to join the N2 Work Experience Steering Group please email owen.harvey@nottinghamcity.gov.uk or call me on 0115 8762820

Thanks again for your support.

Kind Regards

Owen Harvey

N2 Skills & Employment Partnership Manager

27/02/2017   The Big Assembly: On line careers fair 7th March

Dear Colleagues, friends and associates.

As the Apprenticeship Ambassador for Lincolnshire I do have an urgent request this week which I really need your support with please.

During National Apprenticeship Week, ‘The Big Assembly’

This GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title attempt aims to set the record for the largest online careers advice seminar EVER

Schools, young people, parents, careers advisors and employers from across the nation are invited at 08.45, on 7 March 2017 during National Apprenticeship Week to take part in ‘The Big Assembly’ a live video stream to thousands across the UK wanting to find out more about apprenticeships and career options post 16.

As you can imagine to ensure we get enough interest in the event and we need over 5,000 registrations, so as much marketing and media coverage and schools involvement this week is needed.  We need people talking, tweeting and as much social media activity such as face book.  We are looking for a mass involvement next week on the 7th March at 08.45 to achieve this GUINNESS WORLD RECORD.

Please find attached the social media guide, press release and information for The Big Assembly.  Can I encourage you to promote / push and use the social media content within your own networks to make the event as widely known as possible.  I have highlighted below how to register and the differing media options we have and could use.

How to Register

Registration is via www.bigassembly.org

You can find us on twitter @bigassembly and use #bigassembly

I have also attached a couple of ‘sneak preview’ videos which will be used on the day in the Big Assembly live video stream:

This is a short 15 second clip with Pharmacy Trainee Emily Wilby from Boots, she says what she loves and gives advice about what to do if you're interested in apprenticeships.

11/04/2016   Get Ready for the Levy SFA Event!

This event was held at the East Midlands Conference Centre on 31/3/16. It was a chance for all Public Sector Departments and Local Authorities to find out about The Apprenticeship Levy and Public Sector Targets and begin to engage / plan for how their organisations can get the most value for money and return on investment.

I attended on behalf of the two East Midlands Public Service Compacts. I know many of you were there on the day, but for those who weren’t, the presentations are now in the 'Resources' section of this website. There was also a long list of unanswered questions from the floor, which SFA / BIS hope to answer by the end of June.

The D2N2 event on 29th June will be on the subject of ‘The Changing Face of Apprenticeships’ and I am hoping by then we will have some more answers. Check out the 'Next Event' section for more information. We are also planning a webinar to follow up on the event which Adam Barnes at Babington Group has kindly agreed to host. More details of this in the 'Next Event' section.
