15/08/2017   Your chance to participate in the N2 Work Experience Steering Group

Good Morning Chris

We would certainly welcome your participation in the Work Experience Steering Group. We are still taking nominations.

We would also welcome any additional support you can garner from you wider membership including any promotion you can engineer – all would be grateful.

I have included a blurb below for you to circulate to members. I will be in touch will all individuals that have expressed an interest this week/next week to convene a meeting.

Young people in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire’s (N2) disadvantaged communities are not getting enough high quality work experience – What is the Challenge?

  • Employers and schools continue to report frustrations when attempting to deliver successful work experience placements.
  • Across N2, although there are a number of organisations supporting schools and employers to create work experience placements, the number of employers offering placements falls well below that required for the N2 pupil population.

Action - We need your support to develop an N2 Work Experience Steering Group

  • Work experience is a proven way for supporting unemployed individuals in to employment – a strategic priority for the N2 Skills & Employment Board (SEB)
  • The SEB have a role to play in advocating the benefits of work experience and to encourage more employers to create high quality placements.
  • We would like to establish an employer led N2 Work Experience Steering Group.
  • Initially, the group will consist of between 5 – 10 employers, Futures Training and Advice, schools and myself as N2 Skills & Employment Partnership Manager.
  • The aspiration is to deliver a large scale N2 Work Experience Week Campaign. This will see a significant number of local employers offering high quality placements over a period of a week, to young people and adults in our more deprived communities.
  • In addition to planning the event, the steering group will develop a long term plan for how we can stimulate growth in the number of placements available over the next 12 – 18 months
  • This is a perfect opportunity for you as Employers to promote career pathways in your sector readdressing acute skills shortages

I envisage that following the first meeting, much of this activity can be driven remotely, however to kick things off we would really appreciate employers joining the conversation so that we can embed employer need at the heart of this work.

If you would like to join the N2 Work Experience Steering Group please email owen.harvey@nottinghamcity.gov.uk or call me on 0115 8762820

Thanks again for your support.

Kind Regards

Owen Harvey
